      I learned that when teaching our students to have civil dialogues, we should encourage them to go beyond to agree to disagree. The skills to move beyond that are critical to developing citizenship in the 21st century,

      I agree. I teach my students that we are not here to debate, because then the goal is to win and not to understand. The students lose sight of the thinking and consideration of different viewpoints. That is why I prefer to use Socratic Seminars and Constitutional Conversations.

      My students have to always refer back to the Constitution, the other founding documents, SCOTUS cases, etc when they are engaged in their discussions and in their written work.
