In the article “Why We Argue,” a significant demand is placed on ordinary citizens to be highly active participants in political life. Political involvement is valuable, but people will always have different levels of interest, time, or comfort. If the goal is to get more people actively engaged in politics, there must be room for empathy and growth. Listening to understand rather than to judge is key. Meeting individuals where they are at can promote higher levels of engagement with time.
